Paterson has often been referred to as the home of Lou Costello and Larry Doby. It should now also be known as the home of Essence Carson.

She is the epitome of a student –athlete. Ms. Carson graduated from Rosa Parks High School in 2004 with a 4.1 grade point average, ranking fourth in her class. In addition to excelling in the classroom, Ms. Carson starred in basketball, volleyball and track at Eastside High School. Moreover, she is a virtuoso. Ms. Carson plays the piano, saxophone, bass guitar and drums. Essence Carson is a bona fide renaissance woman.

Above everything she is a positive role model that all of our students should strive to emulate. The current captain of the Rutgers’ Women’s Basketball team, Ms. Carson led the Scarlet Knights to the final four this past March and also demonstrated integrity and grace during the Don Imus affair. She is a profile in courage.

The Paterson Board of Education recently feted her at our last regular meeting. In fact, we declared May 25 Essence Carson Day throughout the Paterson Public Schools.
Ms. Carson is aptly named. She is the Essence of Education. She is the Essence of Integrity. She is the Essence of excellence.
